FOOD REVIEW: BY AGE 18

“Wow you ate a lot today!” Said my friend who seldom see me eat much whenever we hang out.

Yes I can be a bit picky when it comes to food, especially it’s difficult to combine good taste and healthy ingredients in one package but @byage18_kl managed to do it, creatively and beautifully.

Located at The Five, KPD, I’ve been to the area once and was captured by the vibrant urban lifestyle vibe. Easily accessible with MRT Semantan station (literally 1 min walk with shaded walkway), By Age 18 was located just a floor above Qra grocery store.

By Age 18 was brought to Malaysia by two talented Japanese duo:

- Mr. Moriro Murakami who is the owner and creative director for By Age 18, decided he wanted to revolutionise how people consume udon by introducing gluten-free ingredients due to his son’s allergies to common udon products.

- Mr. Katsumi Kusumoto who is the owner of famous vegan restaurant called SAIDO TOKYO located at Meguro area, which requires a one month advance reservation. He’s also ambassador for Tokyo tourism.

I had Zaru Udon, the most basic udon selection on the menu without any toppings or flavour because I wanted to truly savour the difference between conventional udon and gluten-free ones. I like its smooth and springy texture, and my body do feel lighter even with a full belly. Wow, is this the benefit of gluten-free food? Sign me up for more!

Their mochi-like gluten-free udon amazes me, alongside with all the fresh veggies variety added into their dishes, this newly available Japanese vegan restaurant definitely levelled up Malaysia’s dining game.

Oh did I tell you that their matcha drinks are perfectly curated as well? I think I just had the tastiest Azuki matcha latte (in Malaysia). The red bean paste blends perfectly with their smooth matcha, a perfect harmony of earthy taste with subtle sweetness. My friend loved her strawberry matcha latte as well!

We then had a perfect sweet ending by ordering the brownies with pomegranate sorbet. Rich chocolate brownies pairs with bright, sparkling taste from the sorbet, thanks to the kind recommendation from one of their friendly waiters, or else we would’ve missed out this dessert.

We had a lot of fun trying out the gluten-free udon and also vegan snacks that tasted so good you kinda forget that they’re all veges. My friend Vinnie keep on praising the food “something I never had before”, “they tasted so natural yet so good” etc. I’m glad we both enjoyed the lunch session.
